Sudden Unemployment: The First 72 Hours
The first three days after losing your job matter, and a few steps in the right order protect your income and your rights.
Most important right now: do not sign anything you do not understand, and write down the date you were told. If the shock feels too much, call the Cleared Mind 24-hour Careline on 0800 212 146.
Losing your job suddenly can feel like the ground has gone. You may be thinking about rent, school fees and what to tell your family. You do not have to solve everything today. The first 72 hours are about protecting yourself.
What is happening
In South Africa, if you have been paying into the Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF), you can usually claim unemployment benefits. Claims are made through the Department of Employment and Labour, online on uFiling or at a labour centre. Your employer must give you a UI-19 form and a certificate of service. There is a time limit to claim, so do it soon.
If you think the dismissal was unfair, you can refer it to the CCMA. The time limit is short, usually 30 days from the dismissal. The CCMA is free. If you were retrenched, you may be owed severance pay, notice pay and pay for leave you did not take.
Your retirement fund is not an emergency savings account. Cashing it out in panic can cost you tax and your future. Get advice before you decide.
Signs to notice
- You were told to leave today with little or no warning
- You were asked to sign a letter or settlement on the spot
- You have not received a UI-19 or certificate of service
- You are not sure if the dismissal was fair
- Debit orders are due in the next few days
- You cannot bring yourself to tell your family

What you can do next
- Today: Write down what happened, when and who said what. Keep every letter and message. Ask your employer, in writing, for your UI-19, certificate of service and final payslip.
- This week: Start your UIF claim. If the dismissal felt unfair, contact the CCMA or Legal Aid SA within days, not weeks. Call your bank and creditors before debit orders bounce and ask for a payment holiday.
- This month: Make a bare-bones budget. Look at grants your children may qualify for. Start job hunting, and ask a career coach to help with your CV.
- Tell your family. Hiding it usually makes the stress worse.
- If there is medical aid, ask about continuing cover before it lapses.
