Setting boundaries
Setting boundaries is how you protect your energy and relationships - kindly and clearly.
A boundary is a limit that protects your wellbeing - what you will and won't accept, and how you'll respond. Boundaries aren't selfish or unkind; they make relationships healthier and prevent burnout and resentment.
Signs you need stronger boundaries
- Saying yes when you mean no
- Feeling drained, used or resentful
- Struggling to switch off from work or others' problems
- Guilt when you put yourself first
How to set them
- Get clear on your limit before the moment
- Say it simply and kindly: "I can't take that on right now," "I'm not available after 6," "I'd rather not discuss that"
- You don't owe a long explanation - "no" is a complete sentence
- Expect some discomfort - people used to your "yes" may push back; hold steady, kindly
- Follow through - a boundary you don't keep isn't a boundary
In practice
Start small, with lower-stakes situations, and build confidence.
Why it matters
Good boundaries mean you can give from a full cup, not an empty one - and show up better for the people and work that matter.
