Nutrition for shift workers

Practical nutrition guidance for shift workers to support energy, sleep and mood despite irregular hours.

2 min read · Awareness resource · Reviewed 2026-09-15

Working night shifts or rotating schedules throws normal eating patterns off balance, but a few adjustments can help you feel steadier despite the irregular hours.

What it is

Shift work disrupts the body's natural rhythms, including hunger cues, digestion and sleep. This can lead to eating at odd times, relying heavily on caffeine or sugar to stay alert, and struggling with fatigue, mood swings or digestive discomfort. Thoughtful nutrition can't undo the challenges of shift work entirely, but it can meaningfully support energy, focus and mood during and after your shifts.

Signs to notice

  • Relying on sugary snacks, energy drinks or excessive caffeine to stay awake
  • Digestive discomfort, especially around night shifts
  • Difficulty falling asleep after a shift, even when exhausted
  • Significant energy crashes partway through a shift
  • Irregular or skipped meals due to unusual working hours
  • Increased irritability or low mood that seems tied to your shift pattern

What helps

  • Eat your main meal before a night shift rather than a heavy meal in the middle of it, which can cause sluggishness
  • Choose smaller, balanced snacks during a shift - protein and complex carbohydrates work better than sugar for sustained energy
  • Limit caffeine in the second half of your shift so it doesn't interfere with sleep afterwards
  • Stay hydrated throughout your shift, as it's easy to forget when routines are disrupted
  • Try to keep meal timing as consistent as possible, even across rotating schedules
  • Create a wind-down routine after a shift to support better daytime sleep
  • Limit heavy, greasy or very sugary foods late in a shift, which can affect energy and digestion

When to reach out for help

If shift work is significantly affecting your sleep, mood, digestion or overall functioning despite these adjustments, speak to a doctor or occupational health professional. Persistent fatigue or low mood linked to shift work deserves proper support, not just willpower.
