Hydration and energy
Staying well hydrated has a direct effect on energy, mood and focus, yet it is easy to overlook.
It is easy to blame low energy on being busy, tired or stressed, when sometimes the simplest cause is that your body needs more water.
What it is
Water is involved in almost every process in the body, from regulating temperature to supporting concentration and mood. Even mild dehydration, before you feel thirsty, can affect energy levels, focus and how you feel emotionally. South Africa's climate, busy workdays and reliance on tea, coffee or sugary drinks can all make it easy to under-hydrate without realising it. Small, steady improvements in how much water you drink can have a noticeable effect on how you feel.
Signs to notice
- Headaches, especially later in the day
- Fatigue or brain fog that is not explained by poor sleep
- Dark yellow urine or infrequent urination
- Dry mouth, dry skin or feeling light-headed
- Irritability or difficulty concentrating
- Craving sugary or caffeinated drinks for an energy lift
What helps
- Keep a water bottle with you at your desk, in your bag or in the car as a visual reminder.
- Drink a glass of water first thing in the morning, before tea or coffee.
- Pair drinking water with existing habits, such as each meal, each meeting, or each bathroom break.
- Notice your urine colour as a rough guide - pale straw is a good sign, dark yellow suggests you need more fluids.
- Increase intake in hot weather, during exercise, or when unwell.
- Choose water or herbal tea over sugary or caffeinated drinks when possible, as these can affect hydration and energy differently.
When to reach out for help
See a doctor if you experience persistent dizziness, a racing heart, confusion, or very infrequent urination, as these can indicate more significant dehydration or another underlying condition. If fatigue, low mood or poor concentration persist despite good hydration, sleep and nutrition, it is worth speaking to a professional, as there may be another cause worth exploring.
