Work-life boundaries

Work-life boundaries protect your health and actually make you better at your job.

Always being "on" - answering messages at night, skipping breaks, never switching off - leads to burnout, not productivity. Boundaries are how you protect your energy, relationships and long-term performance.

Signs your boundaries need work

  • Checking work messages in bed
  • Guilt when resting
  • No clear end to the workday
  • Resentment, exhaustion, or dread

Practical boundaries

  • Set a shutdown ritual - a clear end to the workday (a walk, closing the laptop, a phrase)
  • Turn off after-hours notifications where you can
  • Protect breaks and lunch - even 10 minutes away resets focus
  • Learn to say no or "not now" to protect priorities
  • Communicate your availability so others know what to expect

For managers

Model it. Don't send late-night expectations. Respecting boundaries builds trust and reduces turnover.

Why it works

Recovery is when the brain and body repair. Boundaries are not laziness - they are what make sustained good work possible.
