Confidentiality in EAP explained

Confidentiality is the heart of the EAP - here is exactly what it means and its limits.

2 min read · Awareness resource · Reviewed 2026-09-15

The biggest worry people have about using an EAP is: "Will my employer find out?" Confidentiality is the foundation of the service - here is how it works.

What confidentiality means

  • What you share with your counsellor stays private
  • Your employer is not told that you used the service, or what you discussed
  • Employers only ever receive anonymous, aggregate numbers (e.g. "X sessions used this quarter") - never names or details

The few limits (for safety)

Like all counselling, confidentiality has narrow legal limits: if there is a serious, immediate risk of harm to you or someone else, or where the law requires (for example, certain risks to a child). Your counsellor will explain these upfront.

Manager referrals

If a manager refers you, they may be told whether you attended - but not what you discussed - and only with your consent as agreed in the process.

Why it matters

Confidentiality is what makes it safe to be honest - and honesty is what makes help work.
