Warning signs of suicide risk
Knowing the warning signs can save a life - yours or someone else's.
Most people show warning signs before a suicide attempt. Knowing them - and acting - saves lives.
Warning signs
- Talking about wanting to die, being a burden, or having no reason to live
- Looking for means (pills, weapons)
- Withdrawing from people and activities
- Extreme mood swings, rage, or sudden calm after a low period
- Giving away possessions, saying goodbye, putting affairs in order
- Increased alcohol or drug use
- Sleeping too much or too little
What to do
- Ask directly: "Are you thinking about suicide?" - this helps, it does not plant the idea
- Listen without judging or rushing to fix
- Stay with them or ensure they are not alone
- Reduce access to means
- Connect them to help now - a crisis line or emergency services
Trust your gut
If you are worried, act. It is always better to ask.
