Performance under pressure (athletes)
A mental-skills course for athletes to help manage pressure, nerves and focus during competition.
The difference between training well and performing well under pressure often comes down to mental skills, not physical ones. This course is designed to build exactly those skills.
What it is
Performance under pressure is a mental-skills course for athletes, at any level, who want to compete with more confidence and consistency. It covers how the body and mind respond to pressure, how to manage pre-competition nerves, and how to stay focused when the stakes feel high. Pressure itself is not the enemy. Some activation actually helps performance. The goal of this course is to help you find and stay in your optimal zone, rather than tipping into anxiety that hurts your performance or under-arousal that leaves you flat.
Signs to notice
- Performing well in training but underperforming in competition
- Physical symptoms before competing, such as a racing heart, nausea or shaking, that feel overwhelming
- Racing or negative thoughts in the lead-up to performance
- Difficulty focusing or staying present once competition starts
- Avoiding high-pressure situations or opportunities out of fear of failing
- Harsh self-criticism after a mistake that affects the rest of your performance
What helps
- Building a consistent pre-performance routine that signals to your body and mind that you are ready
- Practising controlled breathing to manage physical nerves in the moments before competing
- Using visualisation to mentally rehearse strong performance, including how you will handle setbacks within it
- Setting process-focused goals, what you want to execute, rather than only outcome goals like winning
- Developing a short reset routine for mistakes, such as a breath and a cue word, so one error does not spiral
- Reframing pressure as a sign the moment matters, rather than a sign something is wrong
- Reviewing performances afterwards with curiosity rather than harsh judgement
When to reach out for help
Speak to a sport psychologist or counsellor if pre-competition anxiety feels unmanageable, if you are avoiding competition altogether, if physical symptoms are severe or affect your health, or if self-criticism after performances is affecting your mood more broadly. These reactions are common among athletes at every level and respond well to proper support.
