Self-compassion practice
Self-compassion - treating yourself like a good friend - is a skill that changes everything.
Many of us talk to ourselves in a way we would never speak to a friend. Self-compassion means treating yourself with the same kindness, understanding and encouragement you would offer someone you care about. It is not soft or self-indulgent - research shows it builds resilience and motivation.
Its three parts
- Kindness instead of harsh self-criticism
- Common humanity - remembering that struggle and imperfection are part of being human, not a personal defect
- Mindfulness - noticing pain without exaggerating or ignoring it
Try this
When you are having a hard time, pause and ask: "What would I say to a good friend in this exact situation?" Then say that to yourself - out loud if you can.
A simple practice
Put a hand on your heart and say: "This is a hard moment. Hard moments are part of life. May I be kind to myself right now."
Why it matters
Self-criticism drains energy and feeds anxiety and depression. Self-compassion gives you the steadiness to face problems and try again.
When to reach out
If your inner voice is relentlessly harsh, a counsellor can help you shift it.
