Gambling becomes a problem long before someone "hits rock bottom." Spotting the signs early makes a big difference.

Signs to watch for

  • Spending more money or time gambling than intended
  • Chasing losses - betting more to win back what was lost
  • Borrowing, selling things, or lying about gambling
  • Restlessness or irritability when trying to cut down
  • Gambling to escape stress, sadness or boredom
  • Money missing, unpaid bills, secrecy about finances
  • Neglecting work, family or responsibilities

If it is someone you love

Approach with care, not accusation. Choose a calm moment, use "I" statements ("I'm worried"), and focus on support rather than blame. You cannot force change, but you can open the door.

What helps

Self-exclusion, limits, honest support, and professional counselling. Recovery is common with the right help.
