Understanding stress vs distress vs disorder
Stress, distress and disorder sit on a line - knowing the difference helps you act at the right time.
Not all stress is bad, and not all difficulty is a disorder. Understanding the difference helps you respond in the right way.
Stress
A normal response to demands - a deadline, a move, exams. Some stress sharpens focus. It usually settles once the pressure passes and you recover.
Distress
When stress becomes too much, too long, or without recovery, it tips into distress: poor sleep, irritability, tearfulness, trouble coping. This is a signal to slow down, get support, and add recovery - not something to push through.
Disorder
When symptoms are severe, last for weeks, and significantly disrupt daily life (like clinical depression or an anxiety disorder), it may be a diagnosable condition that benefits from professional treatment.
Why it matters
Acting at the distress stage - with rest, support and skills - often prevents it becoming a disorder. Waiting until crisis makes recovery harder.
What to do
- Notice your early-warning signs
- Add recovery before you are empty
- Talk to someone when distress lasts more than two weeks
